Tech Trek Navigator: Tracy Kleinschrodt, CPhT-Adv

Meet Tracy, a DME Billing Specialist whose 30-year career as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) has been driven by a love of learning, patient care, and the support of great mentors.
What inspired you to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT), and how did your journey begin?
I needed a job change when someone mentioned a local pharmacy had an opening. I applied, and that opportunity marked the beginning of my career in pharmacy.
What has been the most rewarding part of your journey as a CPhT?
Helping patients get what they need for everyday living has been incredibly fulfilling. I also find great satisfaction in my own professional development. Every time I earn a credential, I feel rewarded. I’ve earned the CPhT-Adv credential and am working towards my fifth certificate.
Can you share a memorable moment from your career?
One of the most memorable moments in my career was receiving a promotion to the corporate office to become a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Billing Specialist, but if I could relive one year it would be 2002 when I was named Iowa Technician of the Year. It was a very rewarding year for me.
What advice would you give to someone beginning their career as a pharmacy technician?
- Take full advantage of on-the-job training.
- Pay close attention to the pharmacists you work with and learn from them.
- Listen to your patients—sometimes they can be some of your best teachers.
- Stay motivated to learn.
- Remember, this is a career, not just a job.
Who has inspired or supported you throughout your career?
The pharmacists I’ve worked with over the years have been a consistent source of support and inspiration. I’ve learned so much from their guidance and example.
What motivates you to keep excelling in your role after more than 30 years?
The desire to keep learning! I’ve earned my CPhT-Adv credential, and I’m continuing to pursue additional certifications.
