Tech Trek Navigator: Christal Harcourt, CPhT-Adv
After 30 years in pharmacy, Christal still finds joy in every patient interaction and new opportunity to learn. Her journey as a CPhT-Adv is full of heart, growth, and the kind of connections that make the work truly meaningful.
What inspired you to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)?
I worked in a hospital pharmacy when the test was first offered. I wanted to learn more about the field and position myself to to advance in my job at the time.
What has been the most rewarding part of your journey as a CPhT?
I love seeing patient satisfaction and hearing directly from patients and providers about their great experiences at our pharmacy.
Can you share a memorable moment from your career?
I’ve been at my current job for 25 years, and the relationships I’ve built with patients have been the most fulfilling achievement. When patients feel comfortable enough to share personal life events, it’s almost overwhelming to realize the trust they’ve placed in you as part of their care team. Their feedback continues to inspire me to help others.
What advice would you give to someone beginning their career as a pharmacy technician?
Dig in and learn as much as you can. Be a team player and always offer to help where needed! In today’s pharmacy world, your effort and attitude will be recognized and appreciated.
What's your favorite part of working in pharmacy?
As a medication sync coordinator, I love the personal connections with patients. Some people are very lonely, and we may be one of their few contacts each month.
Who has inspired or supported you throughout your career?
Every pharmacist I’ve worked with has inspired me. I’ve been blessed to work with pharmacists who treat technicians as equals and encourage us to learn and achieve more.
What keeps you motivated after 30 years in the field?
There are always opportunities to keep learning and to teach others. In 2024, I earned the CPhT-Adv credential, and technicians in our pharmacy received immunization training.
What was your very first day as a CPhT like? Do you remember how you felt?
I had been out of school for 10 years when I earned my CPhT credential. Our hospital pharmacists helped us study and encouraged us. I was really worried about math so passing felt amazing. It gave me the confidence to move forward!
If you could relive one year of your career, which year would it be and why?
Definitely 2024, when the pharmacy surprised me with a 25th anniversary party! That day will forever live in my heart. They invited patients I love so much, some I’ve known for 25 years and others I’ve met in the last seven years at our new location. I was shocked and amazed by the turnout of people who came to celebrate and brought cards! I took pictures with them, spent time reminiscing, and shared many hugs and laughs. Going home and reading their sweet cards, was just confirmation that I’m in the right place, making a difference and sharing friendships with so many amazing people!
What life accomplishments outside of work are you most proud of in the past 30 years?
Watching my two daughters grow into beautiful young women and now having two beautiful grandchildren. After being diagnosed with LCIS, I chose to have a double mastectomy to minimize risk, and my family were incredible caretakers.
