Tech Trek Navigator: Darwin Breland II, CPhT-Adv

Based on his experiences as a Type 1 diabetic, Darwin was inspired to become a pharmacy technician. He’s a night owl who has ended up working the early morning shift—but he still loves what he does.
Tell us about your inspiration and career journey.
I became a pharmacy technician because, as a Type 1 diabetic, I have been involved with pharmacies my entire life. I understand the struggles patients sometimes go through when filling their necessary medications. More than anything, I want to be part of the solution. In the next three to five years, I hope to elevate my career and move into an education/training role.
How have PTCB’s certificates helped you?
My PTCB certificates have helped me advance by providing a way to showcase my knowledge and demonstrate it every day. Working in a hospital, I use my certificates to provide a safe, compliant, and efficient workplace for my peers and patients. I plan to leverage the skills gained from earning these certificates to accelerate my career.
What advice would you give pharmacy technicians as they explore their career paths?
I have overcome challenges in my career with these three steps:
- Ask questions—Never hesitate to reach out to your leadership when you are stuck on an issue!
- Persevere—Remember the reason that you became a pharmacy technician and the reason you put on your scrubs every morning. Let that drive you to excellence.
- Keep yourself grounded —Don’t forget that you have earned your place where you are. You can do this!
