Coming Soon: Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician Credential

As part of PTCB’s commitment to enhancing medication safety and nurturing career pathways for pharmacy technicians, PTCB will be launching a new Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) credential supported by five assessment-based certificate programs designed for advanced technician roles.

What is the CPhT-Adv?

As pharmacy technicians are encountering increased responsibilities in their roles, the CPhT-Adv credential demonstrates that technicians have advanced knowledge in specific functions and are committed to their pharmacy career. The credential also recognizes higher standards of safety and advanced capabilities in the pharmacy environment.

Bill Schimmel, PTCB Executive Director & CEO

“Assessment-based certificate programs are an important step for pharmacy technicians who seek recognition for their education and training, and their dedication to patient safety."

William Schimmel
Executive Director and CEO, PTCB

What are the five available certificate programs?

PTCB staff, pharmacists, technician educators, and CPhTs are developing five assessment-based certificate programs:

  • Technician Product Verification (Tech-Check-Tech): Assess ability to complete state or facility validation process and verify products for dispensing.
  • Medication History and Medication Reconciliation: Assess familiarity with the patient medication interview process, documentation, and patient factors required for taking accurate and complete medication histories.
  • Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention: Assess skills to mitigate risks of controlled substance loss due to diversion through analysis and practical strategies.
  • Billing and Reimbursement: Assess understanding of complex processes and systems that will maximize the business health of pharmacies via third-party billing and reimbursements.
  • Hazardous Drug Management: Assess ability to minimize exposure risks for facility personnel and patients and ensure facility compliance through hazardous drug management.

How can pharmacy technicians earn the CPhT-Adv?

Once a pharmacy technician becomes a CPhT and has completed three years of work experience, they must complete four of the five certificate programs to be eligible for the CPhT-Adv.

While the CPhT-Adv credential will become available as early as 2020, the new certificate programs will launch later this year. Sign up to receive program updates and be the first to hear about the CPhT-Adv credential and the launch of the certificate programs.
