PTCB Suspends Accredited Education Requirement Originally Planned for 2020
PTCB has decided to suspend the implementation of the planned 2020 accredited education requirement for pharmacy technicians who seek PTCB Certification. PTCB originally announced in 2013 that the requirement would take effect in 2020 as part of a road map of program changes designed to keep pace with the evolution of technician roles in the pharmacy. Consensus Conference Planned for February
Christopher Jerry of the Emily Jerry Foundation and Michael Mone of Cardinal Health will be keynote speakers at the Pharmacy Technician Stakeholder Consensus Conference, February 14-16, in Irving, TX. PTCB is collaborating with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) to prepare for the conference, which will bring together pharmacy stakeholders from across the country.

Standardized Certification Important as Pharmacy Technician Roles Expand

He discussed survey findings that show consumers believe certification for pharmacy technicians is very important, and technician training and certification should be standardized. Pharmacy Times Highlights Public Perceptions About Technicians 
Pharmacy Times discussed public perceptions about pharmacy technicians as revealed in the 2016 survey of public opinion conducted by KRC research on behalf of PTCB: “The survey results indicated that patients place high value on technician certification, with 85% of respondents deeming it 'very important' for the technicians preparing prescriptions to be certified.”

Diane Halvorson, CPhT of the Year in 2016, will be honored for her achievements in patient care and advocacy at the CPhT of the Year Luncheon on March 26 at the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition in San Francisco. The event will bring together CPhTs, employers, and members of the pharmacy community to celebrate and recognize excellence. All annual meeting registrants are invited to attend. Space is limited. New Illinois Law Requires ACPE-Approved CE
A new law took effect in Illinois on January 1, 2017 requiring registered certified pharmacy technicians to complete 20 hours of ACPE-approved CE during the 2 years prior to the expiration date of their certificate. One (1) hour must be in the subject of pharmacy law and 1 hour must be in patient safety. Pharmacy technicians are encouraged to review PTCB's CE requirements as they may be different from Illinois’s new CE requirements. CPhT Spotlight: Frank Young, CPhT
Frank Young, CPhT, is an Oncology Technician Specialist at South Pointe Hospital Cancer Center, a part of the Cleveland Clinic, where he is responsible for compounding chemotherapy, procuring drugs and supplies, maintaining the clean room, and administering sterile products competency trainings. In his role, Frank implemented the use of a closed system transfer device (Equashield) for safe handling of hazardous drugs. Read more.
