Public Perception Survey Shows Three-Quarters of Americans Would Seek Out a Pharmacy Where Technicians are Certified
PTCB released the findings of a 2016 public perception survey, revealing that 85% of the public believes it is very important for pharmacy technicians to be certified. Consumers feel so strongly about certification that 76% say that they would seek out a different pharmacy if they knew technicians working in their current pharmacy were not certified. “If consumers find that technicians employed in their regular pharmacy are not certified, they say they will seek out another pharmacy where technicians are certified,” said Everett B. National Pharmacy Technician Day Highlights
In honor of National Pharmacy Technician Day on October 18, PTCB Executive Director and CEO Everett B. McAllister, MPA, RPh shared his executive message with more than 280,000 CPhTs, commending them for their commitment to the occupation and noting that PTCB's recent public perception survey shows consumers focus on safety for their families and expect the technicians who help prepare their medications to have the right credentials. PTCB invited pharmacy teams to join the PTCB photo gallery during October, which yielded more than 175 submissions, while an additional 250 team photos were separately tagged #RxTechDay on Instagram. PTCB also created badges, signs, and graphics for download; pharmacy teams across the US proudly wore or displayed these in pharmacies and online. In honor of the day, pharmacy organizations offered a set of technician discount offers during October. While exhibiting at the National Community Pharmacists Association annual meeting on October 18, PTCB hosted a Technician Day photo booth; 39 pharmacy team members participated, creating themed photo images.

New Nebraska Law Requires Certification By January 1 for Many Technicians
A new Nebraska law, approved in 2016, specifies that a pharmacy technician who is employed by a Nebraska health care facility (hospital, pharmacy, long-term care, etc.) must be registered with the Pharmacy Technician Registry through the state of Nebraska in order to work as a pharmacy technician in that facility. Technicians who were already registered as of January 1, 2016 are required to become certified by January 1, 2017. Any pharmacy technician registered after January 1, 2016 is allowed 1 year from the date of registration to become certified. Their certification must be a state or national certification approved by the Board of Pharmacy. Once certified, pharmacy technicians are required to maintain their certification during the time they are registered as technicians. Read more.

These alerts will allow PTCB to investigate the circumstances behind the alerts to determine if the PTCB Code of Conduct has been violated.
