CPhT Connection - May June 2015

NOW AT PTCB

How Do Patients Perceive Pharmacy Technicians?
While pharmacy technicians have taken on increasingly important responsibilities, their roles on the pharmacy team often go unrecognized by the patients they serve. PTCB Executive Director and CEO Everett B. McAllister, RPh, MPA, says many patients are unclear or unaware of technicians’ roles. Inpatients may not encounter technicians who work at hospitals, while technicians at community pharmacies are frequently confused for pharmacists, he explains. If Your Certification Expires July 31, Apply Now To Recertify
If your certification expires on July 31, 2015, you can apply now to renew your certification. To ensure adequate time for processing, apply by July 1. To get started, log into your PTCB account. Any CE hours you earn after January 1, 2015 must be in pharmacy technician-specific subject matter. One hour of your 20 CE hours must be in pharmacy law and 1 hour must be in patient safety (the ACPE Policy and Procedures Manual’s topic designation 05). You may earn a maximum of 15 hours by completing a relevant college course with a grade of 'C' or better; and a maximum of 5 hours by completing in-service projects. Read more about changes in CE requirements on PTCB's Continuing Education web page and in the PTCB news article.

Free CE Webinar through December - A Review of HIV Treatments Indicated for Pediatric Population
Treatment challenges abound for infants and children living with AIDS or HIV infection. Each year, there are about 200 newly diagnosed pediatric cases in the US, most of which are acquired perinatally. The treatment options for the nearly 12,000 children younger than 13 living with AIDS or HIV infection in the US are limited by many factors. This free webinar program will review current treatments for HIV infection in pediatric patients, placing special emphasis on the challenges associated with treatment as well as the place in therapy of each class of medication. This live webinar will be offered on multiple dates and is worth 1 CE hour. It will be repeated on the future dates through December, including:
Thursday, July 2, 2015 10 PM ET
Tuesday, July 14, 2015 8 PM  ET
Tuesday, August 11, 2015 9 PM ET

Enroll in CPE Monitor
PTCB encourages all pharmacy technicians to sign up for the CPE Monitor, obtain your NABP e-Profile ID, and share your ID number with each of your CE providers. The CPE Monitor is a national, collaborative effort by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) that allows pharmacists and technicians to track completed CPE credits in a central system. At this time, we do not require technicians to submit your CPE Monitor IDs to PTCB. All technicians are still required to manually enter their CE credits into their PTCB Account in order to recertify.

Technician-Specific CEs Available By Subscription
Earn T-specific CE hours through PharmacyTechCE.org. The yearly fee of $60 provides access to more than 30 topics specifically for pharmacy technicians. Topics are available in multiple formats including on-demand activities, CE monographs, and podcasts. Live webinars are offered on new topics each month.
