PTCB Honors CPhT of the Year Master Sergeant Jessica Hughes and Finalists

PTCB recently held a recognition luncheon and ceremony in Washington, DC to honor Master Sergeant Jessica Hughes, US Air Force, CPhT, who was named the 2013 PTCB CPhT of the Year. Finalists Rico Powell, CPhT, and Linda Henson, CPhT, were also recognized during the ceremony. Special guests, members of the PTCB Board of Governors, and staff participated. PTCB Executive Director and CEO Everett B. McAllister, MPA, RPh, presented commemorative awards to Hughes, Powell, and Henson. "PTCB is very pleased to have this opportunity to recognize these outstanding pharmacy technicians who exemplify leadership, innovation, and a focus on patient care,” said McAllister. PTCB's CPhT of the Year Program launched in 2013 to honor individual achievement in patient safety, service, and mentorship as a way to encourage excellence and innovation among pharmacy technicians.

PTCB Updates the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE)

Effective November 1, PTCB replaced the previous Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) with an updated version. Candidates who applied for certification before November 1 are still given the previous version of the PTCE. Candidates applying on or after November 1 will take the updated exam. The updates to the PTCE resulted from PTCB’s latest Job Analysis Study, which involved 25,712 pharmacy technicians from every state and practice setting. Consistent with industry best practices and National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) standards, PTCB conducts this study regularly to evaluate the evolution of pharmacy technician roles. The updated PTCE adds new emphasis to certain knowledge areas, including medication safety and pharmacy information systems, and has nine domains instead of three. Find out what has changed in the PTCE.

New PTCB Practice Test Now Available

PTCB now offers a new PTCE Practice Test built to the same content specifications as the updated PTCE launched on November 1. The new online Practice Test is administered by Pearson VUE and has the appearance and feel of the actual PTCE administered to candidates at testing centers. PTCB released the new Practice Test on December 5.

PTCB Grants More Than Half a Million Certifications

The total number of certifications granted by PTCB recently eclipsed half a million, totaling 503,620 as of June 30, 2013. In 2012 alone, 39,729 candidates passed the PTCE. As healthcare reform is implemented, pharmacists’ responsibilities are evolving to include more direct-patient care, so PTCB CPhTs will increasingly be relied upon to help pharmacists support new information systems and run pharmacy operations.
