Celebrate National Pharmacy Technician Day, October 23, 2012
National Pharmacy Technician Day (NPTD) highlights the important role pharmacy technicians play in supporting pharmacists in the delivery of safe and effective patient care. This year, NPTD will take place on Tuesday, October 23, 2012. Please visit www.ptcb.org for a list of unique ways to celebrate. Encourage Your Instructor or Employer to Join PTCB's Advocate Programs
PTCB recently launched two new programs. The Educator Program is designed for pharmacy technician educational institutions and training programs that provide classroom instruction, position students for employment in the evolving health care system, and prepare individuals to participate in PTCB's national certification program. The Employer Partnership Program is designed for national chain, community, and health-system pharmacies that want to encourage pharmacy technicians to participate in the PTCB certification program. Advocatesreceive a variety of complimentary benefits and resources from PTCB. 2012–2013 Flu Vaccine Now Available—Learn Where to Get Yours
Flu vaccines are designed to protect against three flu viruses that experts predict will be the most common during the upcoming season. Each year, one flu virus of each kind is used to produce the seasonal flu vaccine. The 2012–2013 flu vaccine is made from the following three viruses: A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus; A/Victoria/361/2011 (H3N2)-like virus; and B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like virus. The government recommends everyone six months of age and older should get the flu vaccine. Use the Flu Vaccine Finder to find a flu vaccine location.

Medication Disposal Event Collects More than $1 Million Worth of Medications 
The third annual Medication Disposal Event, held in conjunction with the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) Pharmacy Day at the Michigan state capitol earlier this month, collected more than 579 pounds of unwanted or expired medications worth an estimated $1 million. The medications were dropped off by Lasing-area residents to be properly disposed of. MPA represents nearly 10,000 pharmacists and 15,000 pharmacy technicians in Michigan.

Federal Pharmacy Technicians, Don't Miss JFPS 2012Pharmacy Times OTC Guide Now Available 
Each year, Pharmacy Times conducts a Survey of Pharmacists' OTC Recommendations to provide pharmacists and consumers with a valuable resource. Survey results are now available through a website containing OTC products most recommended by pharmacists. The site features a wealth of information about key health concerns and the OTC brands most often recommended by thousands of pharmacists. The survey will also be available to consumers through a collaboration with U.S. News & World Report.

Join OptumRx for a Virtual Recruitment Event
OptumRx, part of the UnitedHealth Group family of businesses, invites you to attend a virtual event for pharmacy technicians on September 19, 2012 from 1:00–5:00pm. The session,Pharmacy Technicians: How Pushing the Boundaries of the Traditional Pharmacy is Healthier for All of Uswill feature a presentation with Pharmacy Technician Service Representative Supervisor, Abby Rowell, who will share information about OptumRx, UnitedHealth Group, and current openings. Candidates will also have the opportunity to participate in an online chat session with recruiters about career opportunities in Tucson, AZ; Oklahoma City, OK; Costa Mesa, CA; and Sugar Land, TX. Register now.

Registration is now open for the 2012 Joint Forces Pharmacy Seminar, taking place October 28 through November 1, 2012, at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel and the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA. JFPS, previously known as Combined Forces Pharmacy Seminar, is the largest annual event for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard pharmacy community. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians from the active duty, reserve, and retired communities, as well as civilian pharmacists and pharmacy technicians assigned to Department of Defense facilities, are invited to participate in this four-day, education-filled event.

Everett McAllister, RPh, MPA, PTCB Executive Director & CEO, will present at the general session on behalf of PTCB on October 31, 2012. The session PTCB: Posturing for the Future will describe the role of military pharmacy technicians and how they have become innovators in the profession by taking on significant responsibilities within their work environments. As the roles of pharmacy technicians evolves, it is important that military pharmacists and pharmacy technicians learn how upcoming changes will enable them to create an even stronger model of practice.

Registration Now Open for the ASCP Fall 2012 Annual Meeting & Exhibition 
Registration is now open for the American Society of Consultant Pharmasits (ASCP) Fall 2012 Annual Meeting & Exhibition taking place November 6–9, 2012 at Gaylord National Harbor in Oxon Hill, MD. This 4-day event features over 30 hours of Continuing Education (CE). Register by September 30, 2012 to receive an “Early-Bird” savings of $100.

Free Medication Use System CE Now Available through ISMP
Through June 1, 2015, pharmacy technicians may access the CE program Technicians Helping to Root Out Errors in the Pharmacy free-of-charge. The CE program was developed Donna Horn, RPh, DPh, Director of Patient Safety-Community Pharmacy at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), with the goal to improve pharmacy technicians' awareness of underlying system failures that may lead to errors and how these failures can be identified through a root cause analysis or other investigative techniques. This lesson is free to pharmacy technicians and has been developed to meet requirements for PTCB recertification.

Free Pharmacy Law CE Now Available through Drug Store News
Through June 1, 2015, pharmacy technicians may access the CE program Liability Consideration for Pharmacy Technicians free- of-charge. The CE program was developed by Shari Miller, MA, CPhT, JD, Attorney at Shari Miller, Attorney, PLLC, with the goal to improve the awareness of pharmacy technicians concerning the concept of liability and the actions/inactions that may lead to risk for pharmacies and pharmacy technicians. This lesson is free to pharmacy technicians and has been developed to meet requirements for PTCB recertification. 

Pharmacy Technicians to go Global at FIP Centennial Congress
Recognizing the valuable role of pharmacy technicians in the health care team, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) is proud to host a special symposium for pharmacy technicians across the globe. The Symposium for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Support Workforce will take place October 3–4, 2012 during the FIP Centennial Congress in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Megan Coder, PTCB Director of Professional Affairs, will be presenting.
