Pharmacy Technicians Support Telepharmacy in Rural Health-Systems

Telepharmacy is helping pharmacies extend services to more patients, improve medication safety, and alleviate staffing shortages experienced by many rural health care and emergency facilities across the United States. Telepharmacy allows for a pharmacy technician to be remotely supervised in real time by a pharmacist through state-of-the-art telecommunications technology and prepare prescriptions. State Boards of Pharmacy in North Dakota, Montana, South Dakota, Texas, Idaho, Utah, Illinois, Kansas, and Hawaii have adopted telepharmacy regulations, while New York has pending regulations.

“Telepharmacy expands patient access to pharmacy consultations and vital health care services in rural and medically underserved areas,” said PTCB Executive Director and CEO, Everett McAllister, RPh, MPA. “PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technicians play a significant role in this safe and cost-effective alternative, providing patients with maximum coverage."

Important Updated PTCB Policies for CPhTs and Candidates

Recently, the PTCB Certification Council and Board of Governors adopted an updated PTCB Privacy Policy and Social Media Policy. It is important for all Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhTs) and certification candidates to become familiar with these new policies, which are applicable to all current PTCB certificants and candidates, and will become effective June 15, 2012. These policies may be reviewed by clicking the policy title above, which is linked to the full text of the updated policies. These new policies also will be published in the Candidate Guidebook in mid June. PTCB strives to maintain comprehensive and fair certification policies. Questions regarding this notice or the new policies should be directed to PTCB at contact@ptcb.org, or by calling (800) 363-8012.
