Survey in March. The survey, which was developed to give pharmacists and pharmacy technicians the unique opportunity to provide PTCB with feedback on issues relating to eligibility requirements for the PTCB certification program and the creation of new specialty certification programs, received more than 17,000 responses! Results from the survey will provide the PTCB Board of Governors and Certification Council with important input on advancing the work of pharmacy technicians and the future of the PTCB certification program.

Pearson VUE Announces New Alaska Testing Center
In March 2012, PTCB announced the opening of a new Pearson VUE Testing Center for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE). Candidates in Alaska now have the opportunity to test at either the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau or the Pearson Professional Center in Anchorage.

Pharmacy Technicians Play Major Role in Medication Safety
A recent article in Drug Store News
, featuring Megan Sheahan, PTCB Director of Professional Affairs, highlights the frontline role pharmacy technicians play in preventing and reducing medication errors in the pharmacy.
“Technicians need to have increased dialogue with the pharmacist throughout all the checking processes and every other part of the medication fill process they’re involved in,” said Sheahan. “And technicians need to be empowered to initiate that dialogue.”
Sam's Club Names National Pharmacy Technician of the Year
On March 30, 2012, Sam's Club named Karen Weitz, CPhT, as the national pharmacy technician of the year
. Weitz has worked in pharmacy since 1974 and earned national certification in 2004, before it was a requirement of the job. She also scored in the top 10 percent of pharmacy technicians across the country in Sam's Club training exercises.
METC Names Instructor of the Year
PTCB congratulates Corpsman Christopher Owens, a pharmacy technician instructor at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) at Fort Sam Houston, TX, for being selected as the Senior Instructor of the Year! Owens is the Navy service lead and a master training specialist at the METC. Owens leads an instructional team of three senior officers, and 27 enlisted and civilian personnel responsible for training more than 500 pharmacy technician students annually from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, other U.S. Federal Health Agencies and allied nations.
DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
to take place April 28, 2012, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. This event will provide an opportunity for those who have accumulated unwanted and unused prescription drugs to safely dispose of medications.
NCPA to Celebrate Protect Your Pharmacy Week
The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) will sponsor the fifth annual Protect Your Pharmacy Week
beginning April 23, 2012. During the week, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are encouraged to protect their stores, colleagues, and patients against pharmacy crimes, including prescription drug robbery and thefts. To learn more about Protect Your Pharmacy Week, visit the NCPA website
New Sterile Compounding Certificate in OR
Oregon CPhTs, Anthem College in Beaverton is now offering National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA) certification in IV/Sterile Products for licensed or registered pharmacy technicians. The course is designed to train students in sterile product preparation and aseptic technique and consists of approximately 20 hours of instruction and 20 hours of hands-on training and skills assessment. NPTA members receive a $50 discount off the total cost of tuition. Learn more
AAPT 30th Anniversary Annual Convention
The American Association of Pharmacy Technicians (AAPT) invites you to attend the 2012 AAPT Annual National Convention, July 26-28, 2012 in Memphis, TN. Attendees can earn up to 15 hours of Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE), while networking with other pharmacy technicians in the field. Register online
Create Your CPE Monitor E-Profile
The CPE Monitor is a national, collaborative effort by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education that allows pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to track their completed CPE credits in a central system. To prepare for the new process, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are encouraged to obtain their NABP e-Profile ID now to ensure their e-Profile is properly setup. Create your e-profile here
